Question: why did China shut down its stock market after only a half hour? Answer: Because a Chinese stock market crash is not very filling. You swallow a 7% decline, and a half hour you’re hungry for another one. Ba-da Bump! Don’t everybody groan at once. Next question. Would you be surprised if Donald Trumps campaign planted the Muslim protesters at its rally? I would be surprised if he didn’t. Great way to rally the Islama-phobes.
What goes up, Must come down. Spinning wheel, Got to go round. So when China devalues its currency it means we keep getting cheap Ultra High Definition TV’s and Smartphones… The only stock to go up today out of all the Dow Jones Industrials: Walmart. Low Prices Every Day. Where do they get their goods? China. Ka-ching! If I had life to do over again I don’t think I’d change much. But if I had it to do over again and I wanted to instead of being just well off, be really rich, I would have gone into banking. The House always wins. It seems like not long ago my Canadian friend was laughing about the silly USA and our recession and housing market crash. They experienced no such thing. One US dollar would only buy 98 cents Canadian. That was just a little over 2 years ago. Today it’s $1.41 You won’t see as many Loonies at Trader Joes as you did in 2013. Talkin bout your troubles, And you, you never learn. Ride a painted pony, Let the spinning wheel turn…
Watched the Evening News today. I usually don’t, because I’m not quite 70 years old yet. There seemed to be more infomercials than ever. There was a cool looking leather clad wallet for only $19.99 (plus $7.99 shipping and handling). But wait, if you order now you get a second one free, plus an additional $7.99 shipping and handling. Then Fran Drescher hawking a lady privates shaver (head to toe!) for $12.99 plus $5.95 shipping and handling… And, you guessed it, a second one free, for only an additional $5.95 shipping and handling. What rock do these people live under? Have they never heard of Amazon? What kind of people still pay for shipping and handling? These ads are the lowest form of advertising. When you’re running the same ads that used to run at 3:00am then end is near. Today I wondered which network will be first to cancel the evening news.
When I was a kid I loved snow. It was exciting and beautiful outside. But the truth is there was a chance school might be cancelled. That was like the chance of a mini Christmas. No school was pure joy. Not sure why I hated school so much, now that I don’t have to go… I teach college classes and long to spend more time learning. Why? I’m old enough that I don’t need skills for a career. In theory I could just spend my time enjoying entertainment and the outdoors. One is sedentary. The other is beautiful and peaceful and the exercise makes up for the couch potato time. A nice healthy balance. But for some reason I now crave knowing more, and the process of pushing my brain. Is that exercise of the neurological kind? And I love seeing others grow in their life’s journey without me having the responsibility of doing their work. In a way that’s like watching a movie about climbing Mt Everest without having to do the actual climbing.
Visiting family in New England. Had a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee. Had to stop drinking it halfway through because I was too buzzed. This got me wondering. Are my Grande Quad Nonfat Sugar Free Vanilla Lattes less potent than a cup ‘a joe from Dunkins?
Had fever, congestion and chills all night so I’m calling in sick to school. And I’m the teacher! Those who know me know it takes a lot for me to call it n sick. I feel guilty anytime I can’t do something I’ve committed to.
So why am I writing this short blog that no one will read? Because I said I would. I told Joe Moss if he set it up I’d write 5 new posts a week. I’m not promoting it yet, just seeing if I can make it a habit.
Thats how you make something a habit… You practice doing it no matter how you feel.
Lisa and I are downsizing. Why is it so hard?
It feels like we have been squirrels storing nuts for years. And I can remember wanting each and every delicious acorn.
Letting go of stored treasure means either “I’m done with this and it’s just taking up space” or worse yet: “I bought it, but I never got around to using it”.
If I add up the books I haven’t read, the software I didn’t use, the devices collecting dust, and the things I have duplicates of, it gets daunting pretty quickly.
How many items of clothing, kitchenware, furniture, tools, and various gizmos and gadgets do I regularly use? How many just sit there, in case I might need them someday?
Today is Black Friday. As wonderful as it feels to buy and give and get, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we also set aside a day to lighten our load? I know, not going to happen.
Maybe the solution is to be like the squirrel, in reverse. Chip away at it, a little but at a time. You’ve heard this before: Sell, Donate, Trash. 3 piles.
Don’t do it today, but keep it in mind as you load the car with new shit.
Since leaving the radio on August 8, 2014, I’ve been telling myself I will start a blog.
After 33 years of presenting a morning radio show, it felt great to take a break from commentary and humor on a schedule. But I have missed sharing my thoughts publicly.
If the World seems like a F$&@’ Up place, because you are reading about terrorist attacks, and empty headed celebrities, and candidates talking out of 2 orifices simultaneously… Remember that compared to the roughly 7.3 Billion earthlings who mostly play by the rules and love their friends and family, the percentage of nut jobs and murderers is way lower than the amount of attention they get.
Why? Having been in media for a living I will tell you. We got paid to hold your attention, and Drama does that best!
Yes, sad things happen that need to be reported and thought about by all. And sure we’d love more of the drama to be the happy entertainment kind with jokes and great characters. But that’s hard work.
Complaining and pointing out danger is low hanging fruit.
But what if just for today, we imagine how many smiles, acts of kindness, loving gestures, loyal friends, dedicated people working hard, and beautiful supportive relationships will not make the news cycle.
I’m guessing at least 7 billion people are awesome folks you’d love to have pie with!
So I will jump off this diving board and say: Happy Thanksgiving to all. Do or say something nice today. In person, if you can.
